Crowns and Candlelight: Nicole & Alexey's Summer Wedding | Portland, Maine
Some weddings are built around a view. This one was built around a lineage. Nicole and Alexey were married at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland, the same historic brick church where Nicole's parents exchanged their vows, and celebrated at the Portland Sheraton at Sable Oaks, where the day both began and ended. Tradition ran through all of it: the crowns, the candlelight, the procession, and a room full of people who have known these two families for a long time.
The Morning at Sable Oaks
The day started in two suites at the Sheraton. Nicole's side of the morning laid itself out in one frame: the invitation suite, her beaded heels and clutch, the veil, her perfume, and a single tulle wrapped koufeta favor waiting on the tulle. Down the hall, Alexey kept things simple: a watch, cufflinks, a vest, and the steady calm of someone who knows exactly where he is supposed to be that afternoon.
The Church Where Her Parents Married
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church has stood in downtown Portland for generations, and for Nicole's family it holds a specific chapter: her parents were married under this same roof. Walking down that aisle on her father's arm, past the icons and beneath the chandelier, she was adding a second wedding to the building's family history.
The Orthodox ceremony unfolded with its full tradition. The blessing of the rings, the candles, the crowning with the stefana, the shared cup, the walk around the altar table, and finally the first kiss. Alexey's face when Nicole appeared at the back of the church said everything the vows would later make official.
Brick, Granite, and Good Company
The church's brick and granite exterior did half the work for the wedding party portraits. The other half came from the wedding party themselves, who brought exactly the right amount of noise to the front steps.
Rain, Clear Umbrellas, and a Gazebo
A summer rain moved in during the afternoon, and Nicole and Alexey did the smart thing: they leaned into it. Portraits at the church door, a quiet frame in the doorway looking out over the street, and then back at Sable Oaks, two clear umbrellas and a gazebo turned the weather into some of the best images of the day.
Back at Sable Oaks
The ballroom was ready when they returned: their names in light on the wall, the sweetheart table dressed in white, and a dessert table carrying both families' traditions in one spread, chocolate brigadeiros stacked on tiered lace stands beside tulle wrapped koufeta. The grand entrance rolled straight into the first dance, the speeches traded laughter for tears and back again, and once the cake was cut and the parent dances wrapped, the floor belonged to everyone. By the last hour the jackets were off and nobody was sitting down.
Nicole and Alexey's wedding held tradition and celebration in the same hand. Married beneath the crowns in the church where her parents began their own marriage, then dancing in the rain and under the ballroom lights, they closed the day the way they started it: surrounded by family, completely sure of each other.
