Capturing the Sound of Your Wedding Day
When couples think about their wedding film, most picture the visuals first: the dress, the venue, the way the light hits during golden hour. But sound is just as important. The laughter, vows, cheers, and toasts are what make your film feel alive and personal. At VMG, we’ve developed a philosophy around audio that goes beyond simply “making sure the microphones work.”
We approach every wedding with multiple layers of audio recording to ensure nothing is missed. This not only protects against technical hiccups but also allows us to blend sound sources together to create the kind of depth you’ll hear in a professional film.
1. Direct Audio from the DJ or Band
We connect directly to the DJ or band’s sound system—specifically the speaker output. This way, we’re recording exactly what your guests are hearing in the room, rather than relying on the sound board, which can sometimes be inconsistent.
Here’s why this matters:
What guests hear, you hear – We capture the same balanced mix that fills the room.
Reliable feed – By recording from the speaker output, we avoid the risk of low or uneven levels from a sound board setup.
Strong anchor track – This becomes a clean, consistent base layer we can mix with our other audio sources.
2. Discreet & Reliable Lavalier Microphones
We’ve tested different wireless systems over the years and compared what many video companies use—brands like DJI, Rode, and Deity. While those setups can work well, we’ve found a system that fits wedding days better: small, discreet, and dependable in all environments. The mics we use are barely noticeable, which makes a big difference when you’re looking back at your photos and film. (See the sample photos we’ve included to get a sense of just how subtle they are.)
Here’s why we rely on them so often:
Discreet by design – They blend in naturally without sticking out or distracting from the moment.
Quick setup – We can clip them on in seconds, which makes them perfect for moments like:
A father seeing his daughter for the first time
Private vow readings
First looks or first touches
Even a groom stepping off a boat as he walks up for the ceremony
All-day dependability – Once clipped on, they stay put and record clearly all day. We don’t need to pause for battery swaps or worry about interference, even with DJs running sound systems and hundreds of phones in the room.
Natural audio – The result is steady, clear audio that preserves not just the words but the emotion in every moment.
3. Directional Ambient Microphones
The final layer is all about capturing the atmosphere of your wedding. These microphones don’t just focus on voices—they record the room itself.
Here’s why they matter:
Captures the energy – Laughter, cheers, applause, and the natural sound of your guests fill in the texture of the day.
Adds depth – Layered with lavaliers and the DJ/Band feed, ambient audio makes the final film feel more alive and immersive.
Clean and crisp – Directional design lets us focus on speeches while still including the warmth of the room.
Blending It All Together
Each of these sources has a specific role:
The DJ/Band feed gives us a reliable anchor.
The lavaliers ensure clarity during key moments.
The ambient mics add richness and life.
When mixed together, they create a soundtrack that doesn’t just preserve your words but transports you right back into the moment.
Why It Matters
Your wedding film should be more than just moving pictures—it should feel like stepping back into the day. Clear, emotional audio is what makes that possible. When you hear the catch in your voice during vows or the laughter in the room as a toast ends, you’re transported right back.
That’s why we treat audio with as much care as the visuals. The sound of your day is every bit as important as how it looks, and we believe your film deserves both.
