VMG Field Notes Maine & New England

Finding the Right Wedding Photographer in Maine

Five steps to choosing someone you trust with the story of your day. Drawn from more than a decade of Maine weddings, from the coast to the mountains.

Where to begin

Congratulations on your engagement. Of all the choices ahead of you, the photographer is one of the few that outlasts the day itself. These are the images you will still be holding in twenty years, so it is worth a little time to find someone whose work feels like yours.

Here are five steps to get you started, plus the questions worth asking and a note on how to bow out gracefully if a photographer is not the right fit.

Step 01

Know what you like the look of

Every couple has a different eye. Maybe candid moments are what pull you in, or timeless posed formals, or bolder creative shots. The strongest galleries balance all three, so your day is told in full rather than in a single style. Spend some time on wedding blogs, Pinterest, and Instagram and notice what keeps catching your eye.

Step 02

Set your budget

Wedding coverage tends to run anywhere from $2,000 to well over $10,000, so knowing your range early keeps the search focused. Our Chickadee package starts at $1,975 for essential coverage, and packages that pair photo with video start at $4,425. If you want both, the combo packages lay it all out. A separate engagement session is also a good way to test the fit, and we credit its cost toward any wedding package that includes a session.

Step 03

Start researching early

Good photographers book up fast, especially in peak season, so begin as soon as your date and venue are set. Directories like The Knot, WeddingWire, and Zola are a solid starting point, along with social platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. A recommendation from a recently married friend is worth just as much.

Step 04: Review portfolios and galleries

What to look for in the work

A portfolio is a photographer's real resume. As you look through galleries, keep four things in mind.

Consistency

Does the work hold the same quality and feel from one wedding to the next, not just in a handful of highlights?

Variety

Do they capture a real range of emotions, settings, and moments across the day?

Lighting

Can they handle anything the day throws at them, from bright sun to a dim reception hall?

Storytelling

Does the gallery tell a cohesive story of the wedding, start to finish?

Worth doing as you browse: save the frames you love in a tool like Milanote, even shots from other photographers. Sharing what draws you to them, the pose, the color, the composition, helps your photographer bring your vision to life. And if a certain image raises a question, ask. A good photographer can walk you through the challenge behind it.

All told, a full gallery needs both candid moments and posed formals to tell the whole story of your day.
Step 05: Ask the right questions

The questions worth asking

How would you describe your photography style?

We describe ours as photojournalistic with a cinematic, editorial flair. The goal is to capture genuine moments as they unfold, acting as a fly on the wall and offering gentle guidance only when it helps.

During bridal prep, for example, a quiet moment like putting on earrings can feel a little stiff. We might suggest holding your hands near your ears for a beat, then softening into a laugh, so the frame gains a little life. With the wedding party, a bit of lighthearted movement keeps everyone relaxed and real.

For formals, we blend natural posing with gentle movement so everyone looks like themselves. Through the ceremony and reception, we stay out of the way and let the day tell its own story.

Do you have backup equipment and an assistant?

We always carry multiple cameras along with backup lenses, lighting, and gear, so we are ready for whatever the day brings: shifting weather, tricky light, the unexpected. That range lets us adapt quickly and keep capturing your day.

Whether a second shooter helps depends on your day. Some weddings are well served by one photographer, others benefit from an extra set of hands so nothing gets missed. We work that out with you during the first conversation.

What is your turnaround time for delivering photos?

We aim to send sneak peeks within the first week after your wedding. Your full gallery typically arrives within four to eight weeks, and no later than ninety days. That window gives us time to edit and curate carefully so the gallery holds up.

Do you offer customizable packages?

Yes. Every wedding is different, so we are happy to tailor a package to your day, whether that means extra coverage, a second shooter, or an engagement session. We build an estimate that fits your vision.

How do you handle unexpected challenges like bad weather or equipment failure?

After more than ten years, we tend to see challenges like bad weather as a chance for something memorable. We carry backup equipment for any technical issue and adapt on the fly, whether that means romantic rain shots or a dramatic sky.

Do you offer engagement sessions?

Yes, in a few formats and price points. Engagement sessions are included in our full wedding packages like the Mourning Dove and Swan. As a standalone, the Puffin session starts at $600. Tell us what works best for you.

How do you approach candid versus posed photography?

We balance the two so the gallery feels both authentic and polished. Candid frames catch the real emotion and the in-between moments, while posed portraits give you the timeless ones. During formals we guide you with natural poses and small movements to keep things comfortable. The rest of the day, we fade into the background and let it unfold.

What rights do we have to the photos?

You get full print rights to every image in your gallery, so you can print them anywhere and share them freely online. If you would rather not handle the details, we also offer a full print service and can take care of paper stock, sizing, and framing for you.

Do you provide an online gallery or album?

Every package includes an online gallery where you can view, download, and print your photos. Some packages also come with a physical album to showcase your favorites.

What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?

Payments made are non-refundable and retained by VMG, but we do allow rescheduling when there is enough time to plan ahead. Through the changes of 2020 we worked closely with couples to find new dates even around existing bookings, and our small, flexible team does its best to accommodate a reschedule so we can still capture your day.

Can we see a full gallery of a recent wedding?

Absolutely. If there is a particular wedding you would like to see, just ask. We also link full galleries under each couple's wedding page, so you can explore them here.

Reaching out, and deciding

Talking to photographers

Once you have a shortlist, reach out to check availability for your date. A studio with real experience, like ours after more than a decade of weddings, can help even in the early stages, sketching out what a day might look like based on your venue. Be clear about the date, the venue, and roughly how the day will run. A call, a few emails, or even quick texts are all good ways to ask your questions and feel out the fit. We are glad to work whichever way is easiest for you.

And if you choose another team, a short, kind note is all it takes. No need to disappear on us. Our feelings will not be hurt if we are not the right fit, and letting a photographer know simply lets them close the loop. There are many talented photographers in Maine, and the right one for you is what matters.
