Wedding Day
Preparation Guide
Small things that tend to help the day run smoother — based on 10+ years of capturing weddings in Maine. None of these are rules. Just things I've seen make a real difference.
These are a collection of small tips and things to think about ahead of the wedding day. None of these are rules — they're simply things that tend to help the day run smoothly and avoid common hiccups I've seen over the years.
Many of them are small details people don't think about until the moment happens, so this is just a way to make the day easier and more enjoyable.
Getting Ready Tips
If possible, try to have hair, makeup, and getting dressed happen near a window with natural light. It keeps photos soft and natural looking.
Getting-ready rooms naturally fill up with bags, clothes, makeup, and drinks. If possible, keeping one area near a window relatively clear makes photos easier and avoids having to move a lot of things around.
Cell phone service at venues can be spotty. If you have hair inspiration photos, makeup references, or dress tying instructions, save them directly to your phone's photo gallery so they're available even without service.
- Plan the getting-ready space near a window with natural light
- Designate one clear area near the window for photos
- Save all reference photos offline to your camera roll
Bride & Bridesmaids
A small emergency kit during getting ready can be incredibly helpful. Most of these are things that people end up asking for on the day if they aren't already nearby.
- Spare bobby pins
- Emergency sewing kit
- Small scissors
- Spray deodorant (avoids white residue on dresses)
- Fashion tape / dress tape
- Adhesive bra cups or stick-on support
- Clear bandaids or medical tape for shoe rubbing
- Dental picks or floss picks
- Tissues or handkerchief for happy tears
Keep these in a small bag or pouch so they can easily travel with you through the day. Hair ties, Apple Watches, and fitness bands show up in photos — remove them before dresses go on. Also be mindful of watch tan lines once it comes off.
Dresses & Outfit Prep
It's always helpful to try the full outfit ahead of time — dress, undergarments, shoes, jewelry, everything. This helps avoid surprises with comfort or fit on the wedding day.
Depending on the fabric and cut of dresses, it's worth thinking about undergarment visibility so everything looks smooth in photos. Some bridesmaid dresses can be worn multiple ways — take a quick photo during fittings so everyone remembers how theirs ties.
- Do a full dress rehearsal — dress, shoes, undergarments, jewelry
- Check for undergarment lines or visibility in photos
- Photo each bridesmaid in their tied dress at fittings
- Confirm how each bridesmaid dress is meant to be worn
Shoes & Comfort
If the ceremony or formals are on grass, think about the type of shoes you plan to wear. Stilettos can look great but the narrow heel can sink into the ground.
- Heel caps to prevent sinking
- Shoes with a wider heel base
- A second pair of comfortable shoes for later
Comfort usually wins once the dancing starts. Sneakers, flats, sandals, or even going barefoot are all common choices for the reception. Think ahead so the switch feels intentional rather than desperate.
Bustle & Veil
If your dress has a bustle, practice it ahead of time. Ask the person helping to try it during the fitting and take a photo or short video of the bustle points. Bustles are one of the most common things people struggle with during the reception.
Think about how the veil will attach and blend with your hairstyle during your hair trial. Many veils are secured with bobby pins from the sides and bottom. For coastal weddings especially, wind can move a long veil considerably — worth discussing with your stylist how to secure it so it holds through portraits.
- Practice the bustle at dress fitting — photo or video the points
- Discuss veil attachment with stylist at hair trial
- For coastal weddings — ask how stylist plans to secure veil against wind
Groom & Groomsmen
A few small things help the morning go smoothly for the guys as well.
- Haircut 1–2 days before the wedding
- If shaving, do it the night before or early morning to avoid irritation
- Send reminder to pick up suits ahead of time
- Brush or comb and hair product
- Shoe horn (rental shoes are often stiff)
- Cufflinks if required
- Pocket squares — decide fold style and save a reference photo
Before photos start, have everyone empty their pockets — phones, wallets, keys. These create bulky pockets in photos. Designate one safe spot or small bag to hold everything during portraits.
If you're giving groomsmen gifts during getting ready, keep them accessible rather than buried in bags. That moment photographs well and tends to happen naturally when everything isn't being hunted for. See the Gifts & Champagne section for more on timing.
Hair, Makeup & Spray Tans
Hair and makeup for a wedding is different from everyday styling. The goal isn't just looking good for a short time — it's looking great for many hours, in photos, and in different lighting conditions.
- Show photos of your dress to your stylist and makeup artist
- Talk about how makeup and hair will hold up over many hours
- Discuss blending makeup to neck, collarbone, and shoulders if needed
- Ask how stylist plans to secure your hairstyle against wind and movement
- Mention any tattoos, scars, or marks you want covered or left visible
- If spray tanning — do a trial run in advance to check tone and finish
Weddings are emotional days and excitement can bring out natural redness in skin. Good makeup artists account for this. Cameras and lighting can also soften or wash out details, so makeup may go slightly beyond what you'd normally wear.
Flowers
When bouquets arrive, remove them from water about 30 minutes before they're used and wrap the stems in a towel so excess water dries off. This prevents drips or water marks on dresses.
- Ask florist for 3 pins per boutonniere (standard is often only 1)
- Remove bouquets from water 30 min before use — wrap stems to dry
- Ask florist for extra greenery or loose petals for detail photos
Gifts & Champagne
It's often easier to give gifts in the getting-ready suite rather than the night before. That way nothing gets forgotten at an Airbnb or hotel room. Simple gift bags in white, black, or craft paper look great without needing to be complicated.
- Plan to give gifts in the getting-ready suite, not the night before
- If you want reactions captured, let everyone know to wait for the photographer
If you plan to pop a cork or spray champagne for photos, bring a bottle to actually enjoy plus one or two extras for the fun moment. That way the good champagne doesn't get wasted.
- Bring one good bottle to enjoy + extras if spraying for photos
Saving Money on Decor
Weddings can add up quickly and many decorations are only used once. A great way to save money is looking for items other couples are reselling after their wedding.
- Facebook Marketplace
- Local wedding Facebook groups
- Reddit wedding planning communities
- Craigslist
Couples often keep one item as a memory and resell the rest. You can buy secondhand at a big discount and resell afterward — table centerpieces, frames, easels, table numbers, ceremony decorations are all commonly available.
Rain Plan
If rain is possible, clear umbrellas are usually the best option since they photograph well. Before buying any, check with your venue — some keep umbrellas on hand for weddings.
- Check with venue if they have clear umbrellas available
- If not, order a pack online 1–2 weeks before — keep boxed to return if not needed
- Choose clear umbrellas with white or silver accents
Ceremony Tips
Some couples choose to have an unplugged ceremony where guests put phones away and stay present. If that's something you want, it works best when the officiant announces it right before the ceremony begins — signs alone tend to get ignored.
Another option: have the officiant invite guests to take a quick photo once the couple reaches the front, then ask everyone to put phones away for the remainder.
If sunglasses are part of the day, coordinate the style so everything looks consistent in photos. They don't need to be expensive — neutral styles in black, white, or natural wood grain work best. Avoid novelty or monogrammed styles, as they can feel dated in photos later.
- Decide on unplugged ceremony and brief the officiant
- Coordinate sunglasses style if using for the wedding party
